Man singing in a bar in Banff

After spending the day in the great outdoors in Banff National Park, you might choose to spend the evening listening to (live) music in one of the park’s bars or clubs. Or perhaps you’d want to check out a performance at the Banff Centre? or perform karaoke? Whatever your preference, in this post, you’ll find where to go.

While Banff is just a small town, there are many opportunities to enjoy the nightlife while listening to music. You have several options, depending on your preferences. Below, I’ve presented the different kinds of music and performances. Alright, let’s dive in.

Music in Banff

Canada boasts a vibrant live music scene, and Banff is no exception. Many bars routinely host music and artists. Rock and country are likely the two primary genres. But many bars and eateries transform into clubs later in the evening so you can dance to the latest dance music. Additionally, a few locations host karaoke nights.

Below you’ll find an overview of the bars and restaurants that host live music and DJs. I also included a table that lists the kind of music you can expect at what venue.

Fantastic place to enjoy a good night out while entertained by live music. On Mondays, it has open mic nights to make you show off your musical skills.

Performances at the Banff Centre

The Banff Centre on Tunnel Mountain is a world-renowned art institution that hosts several art-related events throughout the year. A sizable portion of their program involves music.

Banff live music is available both inside and outside of the Banff Centre. The Club hosts several gigs year-round. Big concerts are scheduled at the Shaw Amphitheatre during the summer. Both locations are wonderful, but if you can, attend a show at the Amphitheatre. This unrivaled location in the Rockies is simply breathtaking. It feels like a privilege to be able to enjoy live music here.

The Banff Centre programs all kinds of music, from classical to jazz. Check the website of the Banff Centre for upcoming performances.

Music Festivals in Banff

While there are plenty of opportunities to enjoy all kinds of (live) music in Banff, the town also hosts several music festivals each year.

In September, the Banff Centre is the scene of the annual Banff Centre International String Quartet Festival. It presents world-class chamber music and international artists.

Another exciting Banff Centra festival is the Canadian Rocky Mountain Festival. Besides performances of jazz bands, jazz choirs, concert/chamber choirs and concert bands, more than half of the festival involves clinics and workshops.

Unfortunately, it won’t be held in 2023 as The Banff Centre’s Greenham Theatre is being renovated.

In addition, you can attend the Sunset Festival at the Banff Gondola from June to early September. At the top of Sulphur Mountain, you can listen to relaxing (folk) music, take in the view over Banff and the Bow Valley and “celebrate Banff’s most special time of day”. Bring your camera, of course!
