Grand Canyon Trail Updates: What’s Opening and What’s Not This Summer

Grand Canyon National Park has announced important changes to trail openings for 2025. Visitors planning hikes need to know these updates before their trip.

The Bright Angel Trail (photo) and campground will reopen to the public on May 15, 2025. This is good news for hikers who have been waiting since last fall when several inner canyon areas closed for construction work on the Transcanyon Waterline project.

Phantom Ranch Canteen and Lodge
The Phantom Ranch Canteen and Lodge are already back in business, having reopened as planned on April 1. However, some areas will stay closed longer than expected.

The River Trail (between River Resthouse and South Kaibab Trail junction), Silver Bridge, and Plateau Point Trail will remain closed until October 1, 2025. The large group sites at Bright Angel Campground will also stay closed until October 1, though small group campsites will be available.

Black Bridge
From May 15 through September 30, hikers must use Black Bridge to cross the Colorado River. The Bright Angel Trail will be open from the South Rim trailhead to Pipe Creek Beach, but there will be no access to Phantom Ranch via the River Trail.

If you’re planning a rim-to-rim hike, you can use the South to North Kaibab Trail route. But be careful – the park strongly advises bringing extra water to prevent heat-related illnesses. It’s best to hike before 10 a.m. or after 4 p.m. when it’s cooler.

Construction will continue throughout the year on the South Rim and Phantom Ranch water treatment plants. The schedule might change, so check the park’s website for the latest updates before your visit.
