Flash Floods Shut Down Popular Shenandoah Trails – More Rain Coming

Sunrise over the rolling hills of Shenandoah National Park.

A powerful storm has forced Shenandoah National Park to close several major trails and areas after dangerous flash flooding swept through the region. The storm dumped several inches of rain, causing streams to overflow and damage popular hiking spots.

Park officials are warning visitors to stay away from multiple locations due to unsafe conditions. The damage is so severe that some areas may stay closed for an extended period while crews assess the situation.

According to an official announcement from Shenandoah National Park, the following trails and areas are temporarily closed:

  • Limberlost Trail and Parking Area (mile 43)
  • Skyland Horse Trail (mile 49.4)
  • North Fork Moormans River Trail (boundary access from Sugar Hollow Road)
  • South Fork Moormans River Trail (boundary access from Sugar Hollow Road)
  • The Appalachian Connector Trail near Hawksbill Gap parking area (mile 45.5)
  • Old Rag Parking Area (boundary access from Nethers Road)

“Please note: Old Rag Parking Area is CLOSED”, park officials emphasized. The closure affects one of the park’s most popular hiking destinations. Road crews are working to fix sections of Nethers Road that were completely washed out by the flooding.

More heavy rain expected
The situation could get worse before it gets better. Weather forecasts show more heavy rain is expected over the next several days. Park officials haven’t finished checking all trails yet, so visitors should expect to find high water or damage in other areas too.

Officials are asking people to respect the closures and avoid traveling on damaged roads. “Unauthorized vehicles may interfere with VDOT repair operations and risk further delays or damage. Non-local travel is strictly discouraged”, the announcement stated.

Visitors can stay updated on closures by signing up for park alerts. Simply text “SHENALERTS to 888777” to get notifications about reopenings and safety updates.
