Shenandoah National Park in Virginia is working with utility companies to improve infrastructure in the park. They are upgrading the water system in the Big Meadows area. This work will cause some power outages.

The project will upgrade utility poles to install new communication lines from wells to the water reservoir in Big Meadows. These changes will affect visitor services in the Big Meadows area (mile 51), writes the National Park Service.

Power will be out at different times for up to two weeks starting Monday. The outages will happen Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. During these times, Big Meadows Wayside, the gas station, and Byrd Visitor Center will use generators and stay open. Bathroom facilities will work, but showers won’t be available during outages. Ice and wood sales will move to Big Meadows Wayside temporarily and return to the Big Meadows woodyard when the project is finished.

Rappahannock Electric Cooperative (REC) and the park started this project earlier to upgrade electric equipment including utility poles. This work helps improve the recently upgraded water system. REC will replace 11 utility poles on the Big Meadows line, which might take up to two weeks to complete.
